The Martydom by the Third Reich and the Church, of Greek Jewish child Rita Levi of Corfu. She was murdered at the Nazi’s Auschwitz death camp in Nazi-occupied Poland, 1944
Media: Ink, colored pencil, watercolor, gouache
Paper size: FRAMED, 25 7/8 INCHES H X 19.5 W [65.7 cm x 49.5 cm]
art: 2022
Drawing begun January 17, 2022; completed January 30. The wood frame was artified March 14-15, 2022.
I had the drawing framed in a plain heavy dark brown wood frame. On March 14 and 15, 2022 I added various found objects, along with 2 things I bought at a charity thrift store: The two purchased items are a toy structure, at lower right, looks like a house, which has writing on the back (no longer viewable, as that's permanently sealed on the wood base) stating something about KLM and Holland. At lower left, I attached a small chest (which has a pleasant decorative exterior). Both the house like building and the chest are, to me, symbolic of things a young girl child might have and play with.
~
Other items I mounted include pieces of metal picked up on beach walks and picked up on the sidewalk or street, e.g. in Seattle. At upper right I mounted a part of a metal candle stick holder.

The decorative thingy to viewers left of the house like building (at lower right) was given to me by a neighbor for possible use in one of my mosaic-drawing combo artworks or other art framing. And, a railway spike.
The source photo of her i used for my drawing is viewable in the Yad Vashem photo archives online:
https://photos.yadvashem.org/photo-details.html?language=en&item_id=14143838&ind=1
The portrait was drawn from a photo I saw in the website of Yad Vashem, Jerusalem.

The 8 sea monsters are allegorical.
The large sea monster, upper left, was inspired by a color photo of a 'dragon moray eel,' page 26, in the book LIFE - NATURE LIBRARY - The Fishes, pub. by Time, Inc., N.Y.,1963-1964.

Rita Levi, birth date not known, was a Greek Jewish child from Corfu, in northwest Greece. I saw her photo in the Yad Vashem photo archives. She was murdered at the Auschwitz death camp in Nazi occupied Poland, 1944. The source photo was submitted by someone by name of Erez Naomi. A search of her name brings up a page of 7 photos. One is of an adult, Simcha Levi. Two are children: Rita, and Yosef. I wonder if Rita and Yosef were brother and sister; and if Simcha was their mother? And then who was their father and what happened to him?

A brief background about the Jewish community of Corfu, Greece, excerpted from this online page: https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/... "On the eve of World War II the community numbered 2,000. During the occupation by the Italians (1941–43) there was relative quiet. The Germans occupied the island Sept. 27, 1943. On June 14, 1944, 1,800 Jews were deported to Auschwitz. By 1948, the number of Jews in Corfu was 170; in 1968 only 92. In the early 21st century fewer than 50 Jews remained, and one synagogue."

I visited Corfu in August 1985. See, in the Other Holocaust Art gallery in my website, scroll down to OHA 1985: Two drawings, each framed: The Corfu Jewish Cemetery, August 1985
