The Allegorical Sea-War Monsters and 2 child victims of the 2023 Hamas and Israeli war and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict-without-end.

Media: Ink, pencil, crayon, watercolor and pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, which were scattered on pavement in a park I walk in. The upper part of the artwork is a framed photo I took on a drive to the Dead Sea, from near Tel Aviv, in 1999.

In late March 2024 I added a  plastic toy, found on a sidewalk, on the bottom frame; a piece of a broken wood paint brush, added to the small upper right frame, and 4 pieces of a child's game, each with an animal depiction, on the frame at top.

Art: 2023, with 2 found objects, and 4 pieces of a toy game added March 18, 2024.

Art size: 34 inches H x 20 W. [ 86.36 cm. H x 50.8 cm. W]

The upper part of the artwork is a framed photo, mounted on a piece of found wood. I took the photo, of a grassy landscape and tree, on a road trip to the Dead Sea, in Israel, in 1999 or 2002. On the left and right sides of that frame I attached pieces of broken pavement markers which I find broken on the pavement. In my art they are meant to evoke the claws of a monstrous, voracious lobster. At upper right, in a small wood frame, I inserted dried seaweed I had brought back from the Mediterranean, which I  had picked up when I'd gone swimming near Tel Aviv, 2005.

On the left and right sides of that frame I attached pieces of broken pavement markers which I find broken on the pavement. In my art they are meant to evoke the claws of a monstrous, voracious lobster.

The small black frame at upper right contains dried seaweed, which I picked up on a beach near Tel Aviv when I'd done swimming in the Mediterranean, 2005.

The horizontal purple'ish wood below the framed photo is a piece of found wood. The two holes were in the wood; they evoke eyes. We can't say we have not seen nor known  about the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack, and the Israeli military actions which followed, including missile strikes on Gaza. Collectively this adult-driven war madness has taken thousands of lives.

I began the drawing on October 19, 2023, of 2 child victims of the current Israeli-Palestinian conflict-without-end. My drawing includes allegorical sea monsters. These are meant to help teachers and students (students are called pupils in British English) discuss interpretations and meanings to my Under the Wings, Sight-seeing with Dignity and other Holocaust artworks.

I began this drawing thinking about all the children who needlessly die in conflicts worldwide.  That’s as the adults who drive the horror and misery with violence, terrorism and reprisal military solutions (which never work!) refuse to sit down, break bread and seek to end the conflicts. Most of the conflicts worldwide are about land; many have the added horror of religious clergy and faith sanctioning violence against those perceived as "the other" and different.

If the South Africans, in 1989; and the Northern Irish, in 1998, could hammer out the peace with their hated enemies viewed as terrorists on both sides of their conflicts, why can't the Israelis and the Palestinians do the same? What are they waiting for?

On October 21, 2023 I began drawing the portrait of the girl, using ink in a metal tipped drawing pen, seen at lower left in the drawing. After that was partly done I began the portrait of the slain Gazan boy, lower right in the drawing.  Both portraits took several drawing sessions to complete.
~
In the drawing, the girl, at left, was drawn from a Kedem family photo.
Both parents, Tamar and Yonatan, and their three children: Twins Shachar and Arbel, age 6, and son Omer, age 4, were slain by Hamas militants, October, 2023 at the Nir Oz kibbutz where they lived, near the Israel-Gaza border.

I first saw the photo of the Kedem family in the website of The New York Post; published online dated October 9, 2023, at this url:

In the drawing, the boy at right: Abdel Nasar, age 2. He; his dad, Ahmed Shamlakh, age 56; and Abdel's 2 month old brother, Omar, died from an Israeli missile strike on Gaza. Drawn from a photo of the dad and his two sons published in The Independent, UK; photo attribution listed as Supplied.
