Gompers was born in London, England, 1850 to an English Jewish family of Dutch descent. The family emigrated to the US in 1853; his teenage years were in New York City. He began working at age 17. He was a founder of the American Federation of Labor, known by the acronym AFL. The AFL later merged with the Congress of Industrial Organizations, making the acronym AFL-CIO.  Gompers passed on in San Antonio, Texas, 1924, at age 74.
